C&D, or similar) had an entire article on performance meter testing. I think they referred to the deep vs. shallow staging as the "roll out" distance. Some meters took it into account and some didn't. It was a pretty comprehensive write-up, and short of an actual GPS, they all fall a bit short if trying to compare to drag strip times. There is some value if one is just learning the car, shift points, etc.
